Healthcare facilities are notoriously hard to navigate. Between various wings, branches, patient rooms, and elevators, finding your way through one can feel like being lost in a maze. The mark of an excellent healthcare facility is good signage—particularly good Wayfinding signage.
Wayfinding Signs simply directs people to their destination. The helpful little arrows point people in the direction in which they need to travel, taking the guesswork out of where to find what they're looking for. A Wayfinding Sign will plainly tell someone whether to take a right or a left to get where they're going.
Many people don't realize that there are several different types of Wayfinding Signs:
Directional Signs usually include a location and an arrow that points the reader in the direction of said location.
Floor Directories list multiple locations and which way to go to get there. These directories often come with changeable inserts for easy updating.
Building Directories are similar to Floor Directories, but are much larger, and are primarily used to indicate the locations of more than just suites or offices. Building Directories are good for identifying sections of a hospital, various parking garage levels, etc.
Overhead Signs function similarly to Wayfinding Signs with a few exceptions: instead of being mounted flat on a wall, Overhead Signs are generally hung from the ceiling or are mounted perpendicular on a wall, and are double-sided so that they're visible from either direction.
